A word from Bob ....... |
On Friday September 6 1996 my future was thrown into total disbelief
and horror. Here I was in the back of an ambulance en
route to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead with my daughter
Rebecca, then four years of age, diagnosed with cancer about
3pm that afternoon. It’s every parent’s nightmare,
especially that word cancer.
The following days and nights proved to be a most gut wrenching
and life draining experience. Pieces of me died over those
initial days and the pain still remains. Would my child
die? The future did not exist and was questioned every
minute of the day and night. The concept for Kayaking
for Kemo Kids developed at this time in the Oncology Ward –
a place where reality is in your face and cuts you to the bone,
but a place that ultimately bloomed with life, hope and inspiration.
Fundraising for cancer research and support by charitable organisations
and community groups (supported by individuals, the public and
business sector) have given me the greatest gift of all –
my daughter’s life and a future – thank you.
Rebecca’s courage and help from family, friends and supporters,
along with the angelic dedication of hospital staff is life
changing. I am eternally grateful and pledge to continue
the search for a cure for cancer and give support to those organisations
that support our seriously ill kids.
Our world today has many questions about its future. Life’s
too short, but through this traumatic event I have experienced
the heart and soul of the positive side of human nature in this
great southern land, through its communities and breathtaking
scenery.
In 2010 we will take to the ocean for our final paddle - after
12 years of adventure fundraising and the ups and downs of such
an amazing journey, more ups than downs, it is time to hang
up the fundraising paddle. It has been a difficult decision
to make. Words cannot describe the amazing and humbling experiences
I have had, the people and communities we have met and most
importantly the difference each and every one of our supporters
has made to children’s cancer research and support in
this country.
I invite you to contribute and support our team of volunteers
and join us on our fundraising efforts and awareness to the
plight of our children diagnosed with cancer. I look forward
to meeting you along the way. |
